Current New Major Pages

Now that the Glossary and Card Reference is nearly complete, I'm moving on to a number of new pages that I'd like to get finished before renewal rolls around, because once it does, we'll be focusing our efforts on fixing skill pages and mechanics. The current page I'm focusing on is Places, to be a quick reference for various locations on RO. It's designed to be a reference for players who simply don't know what "Ice Caves" is, because there's no page on it, and searching it previously have vague directions. Once that's done, I'm planning to do Card Sets, because there doesn't seem to be a complete list for that yet, either. The next logical step is Equipment Sets, but I'm still not sure about that one. Does anyone else want to list other pages that we should focus on, before renewal? — Steax(Talk) 22:13, 2 June 2010 (MDT)

Encyclopedification

Okay, so it's not a real word, but bear with me. Right now iWiki seems mostly more like a factbook than an encyclopedia. It has all the data we need on skills and mechanics, but rarely actually explain how the mechanics would apply to a real character (except the build sections). So what I suggest is we start pouring more public-opinion resources into pages; for example, noting on a skill's page what it's uses are and what builds usually take them. I'd also like to expand on currently limited sections such as WoE, but into more detailed articles such as general defensive setups and such.

It will get a lot more opinion stuff into iWiki, and I don't know if that's good or bad. Yet it should introduce a lot of new information for readers, especially people less familiar with all the current calculation stuff and just 'wants to know what they should do'. Comments? I plan on adding tactical sections on skill pages if it's all go. --Steax 02:51, 14 May 2009 (MDT)

I've never objected to that sort of thing, go right ahead. Just try and be consistent. --Resplendent 09:54, 14 May 2009 (MDT)
How about adding an "opinions" section and template to most pages?Barefoot 06:10, 2 September 2009 (MDT)

How about adding short skill descriptions on the classes' page? It's definitely not easy to choose ones you're interested in at a glance right now, especially if you're new to the game. Barefoot 17:12, 1 September 2009 (MDT)

There, I've tried adding descriptions to the Merchant page. If it's okay, I'll start adding those to other classes, at least for the abilities I know. Barefoot 06:02, 2 September 2009 (MDT)

For each class, the "Builds" subsection is listed before the description of that class's skills. For example the [Acolyte] page has sections in the following order: Overview, Jobchange Guide, Builds, Equipment, Class Data, See Also, Links. If this was more like an encyclopedia, the section describing the class's skills would be more logically located prior the "Builds" section which makes references to various class skills. Since the class skills are being relisted in table form, this would also be a good time to update the section order as well.Naeko 19:44, 1 October 2009 (MDT)

Skill Images

Some skills need new images for various reasons. One of the most critical problems is that some trans skills' images use 2nd class sprites, which may be confusing or misleading. The following is a list of skills like such:

Updated to the remaining skills. Thanks to those who've contributed. Please try to remove the HP/SP bars with alt+end next time before taking photos (you don't have to redo yours, but it'd be nice if we can keep them all conformed). — Steax(Talk) 10:11, 16 May 2010 (MDT)

Third Classes & Renewal Information

Do you think we should get started on the 3rd class pages? Although they aren't in the game yet, they ARE in the game data already, and we can put, for example: "Rune Knight is the 3rd Job Class of the Knight class. It is currently not available in iRO, but is expected to come out soon, with Renewal." --ArcLumin 21:11, 30 January 2010 (MST)

Once we get a firm timeline on renewal is when I think we should start. Since it seems stuck on kRO for the moment, who knows when we'll be getting it. I have however, begun making back-end preparations for the addition of renewal content. --Resplendent 22:41, 30 January 2010 (MST)
Considering we have a reasonable timeline now, can we start on 3rd class pages? --ArcLumin 02:34, 15 March 2010 (MDT)
In any case, I've setup a renewal template, {{Renewal}} for any possible articles related to renewal and third classes. Once we get the go-ahead I guess we can start. — Steax(Talk) 06:42, 15 March 2010 (MDT)
I haven't seen any timeline from iRO. The 14.1 thread on the forums really doesn't shed any light on iRO's plans. --Resplendent 11:11, 15 March 2010 (MDT)
Heim did say explicitly in his adress that renewal was coming this year, and that it was coming to Sakray early summer or so. I see no reason to wait for more info, as we have 3rd Job info already. I don't see why we shouldn't at least start the pages. --ArcLumin 13:15, 15 March 2010 (MDT)
I say we start work, but not integrate it into the rest of the wiki yet (not updating the Classes page, etc). Keep it separate and don't link to the articles from existing content; maybe just have a single Renewal page which links to them. We can work on them now, and then integrate it into the rest of the wiki when renewal does hit. Because otherwise, when renewal comes, we'll all have to rush into completing 12 classes and some 200 skills or so in a matter of weeks, which is a tough deal IMO. And people will want all the info they can get regarding 3rd classes the moment they get implemented. — Steax(Talk) 14:00, 15 March 2010 (MDT)

If you want to, you can make them a subpage of Renewal i.e. Renewal/Sorcerer but I'd like to hold off on putting the actual pages up. We don't know what final builds will be, skill descriptions, iRO skill or class names, job change guides/NPC names, or even if some of the sprites are getting redesigned. Since iRO skill names tend to be radically different from kRO's, I think it best to not make skill pages yet. Once we have renewal on iRO Sakray we can transfer them to their real spots. --Resplendent 14:05, 15 March 2010 (MDT)

Fair enough. I think we can get started with the bulk of the work (making tables, setting up page templates, basic skill functions etc) now, fill in data as it gets received from our kRO sak testers, and later move them to their permanent positions once we confirm their validity on iRO sak. — Steax(Talk) 16:51, 15 March 2010 (MDT)
All of the map data, items, and class sprites are already in the client, so pulling those will be simple. Also, skill names MIGHT already be in there. --ArcLumin 18:07, 15 March 2010 (MDT)

Renewal has gone in it's beta phase on Yggdrasil. What's next regarding the wiki? --Seravee 11:18, 10 September 2010 (MDT)

Builds for 1st-Class

In my opinion, the 1st-classes (aco/merch/archer/sword/thief/mage) don't need build sections other than links pointing to their corresponding 2nd-class pages' build sections. What are everyone's thoughts on this? -- Phaen 06:08, 29 May 2010 (MDT)

I personally feel that first class pages don't have to be as complete as second classes. A simple skill table and quest instructions will do, and prompt the user to also see the 2nd class pages for more planning information. — Steax(Talk) 09:43, 29 May 2010 (MDT)

Wiki Renewal Plans

Here are my current plans of attack for when renewal comes:

  • Set up new copy of MediaWiki on the iW domain
  • The current wiki will becoome the pre-Renewal wiki and the url will change to http://irowiki.org/oldwiki or something similar
  • The new copy of MW will become the renewal wiki and will have a completely duplicated database (sans users). This saves us a lot of time having to manually copy every page that is changed with renewal and from having to redo every navbox and intrawiki link.
  • The new MW will share the user database with the old/pre-renewal wiki and will share uploads. The new wiki will take over the URL of the current wiki.
  • Interwiki linking will be used to go back and forth, with "Renewal Version" or "Pre-Renewal Version" showing up in the sidebar for pages with changes between the two.
  • Pages that are NOT changed will be kept only on the renewal wiki to avoid duplication there. Unchanged pages on the current (pre-renewal) wiki will be deleted and redirected to the renewal wiki. Intrawiki links can be left the same or changed to remove double redirects.

So that's the current plan. Please feel free to give feedback and suggest changes. --Resplendent 15:10, 26 August 2010 (MDT)

So if I understand, you want to copy all wiki data into a new database, removing from old database articles like Kafra or Prontera, redirecting them in "pre-Renewal Wiki" to "Renewal Wiki". But leaving two versions of the articles like Base EXP Chart.
Well, the only issue I see is the people that visits the "pre-Renewal Wiki" can get tired of going back to "pre-Renewal Wiki" each time they visit a page that redirects them to "Renewal Wiki". --NeoSaro 14:07, 6 September 2010 (MDT)
Perhaps, but the pre-renewal wiki isn't really going to be used much after we have Renewal, it's only being kept as an archive. I think people care more about the current state of the game, so it's a drawback that I'm willing to put up with. If you have any suggestions that might help with the issue, feel free to share. --Resplendent 16:14, 6 September 2010 (MDT)
I would suggest archiving the current state (into plain HTML or removing all accounts + disabling registration) and have everyone concentrate on the Renewal wiki. We shouldn't really split our resources between the two wikis. The preR wiki probably won't have any significant edits either once renewal comes out. This is probably also a good chance to make sure all of our skill and class pages conform to each other. — Steax(Talk) 03:30, 10 September 2010 (MDT)
I was hoping to keep the pre-renewal wiki editable so any remaining errors could be fixed. An uneditable wiki seems to go against the point of having one. But I realized we could just (assuming I can get it to work) transclude pages that didn't change instead of redirect. This should keep the two completely separate while making it so we don't have to keep both versions of unchanged pages. --Resplendent 08:30, 10 September 2010 (MDT)

Incoherence in Transcendent Infoboxes

Today I noticed some incoherences of "Number of Skills" and "Total skill points" in transcendent infoboxes Some of them like Champion uses the transcendent and 2nd job skills, in this situation: 21 / 194, some like Paladin uses only the transcendent skills: 4 / 25 and some, I can't figure out what they follow for total skill points Assassin_Cross: 5 (transcendent skills) / 69 (?)--NeoSaro 09:10, 10 September 2010 (MDT)
