Etymology

• Basilica (βασιλική) in Greek means "royal" or "kingly", derived from βασιλεῖος (basileios) meaning "king" or "royal".
• In ancient Rome, it referred to a spacious, rectangular public structure used for legal matters and various civic activities.
• In religious context, it refers to a church that has been granted special privileges by the Pope.
