What is a Blacksmith?
Blacksmiths have the ability to forge weapons. They can master the power to imbue weapons with elements of Fire, Earth, Wind and Water and also have the ability to increase the weapon damage further. Of course, Blacksmiths can also be based off raw physical power, and even have the highest melee damage among the other 2nd classes. A Battle Blacksmith's main skills revolve around the theme of self-buffing to increase damage. The main offensive skills are Mammonite and Cart Revolution, which both can be learned as a Merchant.
How to become a Blacksmith
In order to become a Blacksmith, the player has to be a Merchant with at least 40 job levels. Then it must visit the Blacksmith Guild located in the southeastern part of Einbroch [255,110]. By talking to Altiregen (the guildsman behind the desk), the job change quest will begin.
Geschupenschte
Altiregen will ask the player to find Geschupenschte in Einbech. By heading to the Tool Shop [177,133] and answering Geschupenschte's questions correctly (or failing to answer all 10 correctly twice), he will make clear which items he is in need of. Item examples are:
- 8 Iron
- 20 Green Herb
- 2 Animal Skin
- 1 Ring Pommel Saber [2]
or
- 8 Iron Ore
- 1 Eye Patch
- 2 Blue Gemstones
- 1 Arbalest Bow [1]
or
- 2 Steel
- 1 Rotten Bandage
- 2 Blue Gemstones
- 1 Arc Wand [1]
or
- 2 Star Dust
- 1 Skel-Bone
- 1 Zargon
- 1 Gladius [2]
or
- 2 Coal
- 2 Shell
- 2 Red Blood
- 1 Tsurugi [1]
The items desired are random. Although he will always ask for a type of weapon, all of which can be purchased at NPC shops. After bringing Geschupenschte the items he's asking for, he'll refine the weapon. He'll want the result to be delivered Bismarc, a person standing near the airship in Hugel [168,183], Talpiz in Payon [214,79], or Baisulist [46, 164] in Geffen, Krongast [209, 80] in Lighthalzen, or Wickebine, Morocc (27, 112). It appears that Geghupenshte imbued the weapon with Green Herbs, so Bismarc could cure his poison with it. He'll give the player a voucher which Geschupenschte is interested in. When Geschupenschte has recieved the reciept, it's time to head back to the Blacksmith Guild and talk to Altiregen again.
Mitehmaeeuh
Altiregen wants the player to talk with Mitehmaeeuh, a female blacksmith in the back of the Blacksmith Guild. She'll let the Merchant do a quiz, but this time it's 5 questions (instead of 10 as in the quiz with Geschupenschte).
1) What ability is required to learn the Discount skill? A) Level 3 Enlarge Weight
2) When you attack with Hammerfall, what status effect can you inflict on enemies? A) Stun
3) How much Zeny is spent when attacking with the mastered Mammonite Skill? (Level 10) A) 1000 Zeny
4) What is the discount rate when the Discount skill is mastered? A) 24%
5) What is the maximum percent that you can overcharge items sold to NPC's after mastering the Overcharge skill? A) 24%
or
1) Which of the following monsters drops Steel? A) Skel Worker
2) Which of the following stones can be made from Red Bloods? A) Flame Heart
3) Which of the following stones do you have the most of in your Kafra Storage? A) I guess you should know your storage for this one. @_@
4) In general, which of the following properties receives the most damages from Wind attribute weapon? A) Water property
5) How many Iron Ore is required to make 1 Steel? A) 5 - this is kind of a trick, but I think that it is more likely a mistake in the translation. It should be "Iron" not "Iron Ore".
After the questions has been answered decently, she will hand the player a Hammer of Blacksmith to give to Altiregen. After giving the hammer to Altiregen, the player will turn into a Blacksmith. If you were job level 50 as merchant, you receive 30 Steel.
Common Builds
There are three common Blacksmith stat builds: Battlesmith, Pure Forger and Battle Forger.
Battlesmith
A Battlesmith usually obtains all of the combat skills and no forging or refining skills. Superfluous smith skill points are spent towards maxing Merchant skills like Enlarge Weight Limit. The exception is level 1 Iron Tempering and Steel Tempering, which is needed for Ore Discovery. Battlesmiths vary in stat builds, but most invest heavily in STR.
Pure Forger
A Pure Forger masters the art of forging weapons and therefore lacks skills in the combat department. It is not wise to make a Pure Forger as a first character, since leveling one is difficult.
- Soloing and partying: Difficult due to the lack of offensive and defensive skills.
- Leveling with a tank: Possible at lower levels, but quickly becomes ineffective after becoming a Blacksmith.
- Leeching from an even share party: The preferred way, and probably the fastest way of leveling a Pure Forger.
As a Pure Forger, the main stats are very simple: DEX and LUK. They equally increases the chance to successfully forge weapons. The ideal forging stat build has 99 DEX and 99 LUK, leaving only 9 points in either STR or INT. Since stat points are vastly more expensive at higher levels, and since 99 DEX and LUK make levelling difficult, some players choose not become entirely Pure Forge. This is the route of Battle Forgers.
- For every 1 point of DEX you have, adds 0.1 to your forging sucess rate.
- For every 1 point of LUK you have, adds 0.1 to your forging sucess rate.
- Every job level adds 0.2 to your forging sucess rate.
Battle Forger
Battle Forgers get the essential combat skills, but invest in forging skills in place of less useful combat skills. While they cannot compare with the success rate of a pure forger, they are able to level independently. It is very hard to give any specific build stats when it comes to Battleforgers, since it depends mostly on what the player wishes to forge.
